A Glimpse into an 80s Wedding Inspired by the TV Show Rivals
The 1980s was a decade of bold fashion choices, vibrant colours, and extravagant celebrations. From the music to the hair, the 80s had an energy all its own. If you’re a fan of the show Rivals and want to take a nostalgic trip back in time to the glam and drama of the era, why not infuse that vintage vibe into your wedding day? This was the inspiration for our styled shoot at the West Mill.
The hit TV show Rivals—with its mix of power, passion, and rivalry—captures the essence of a time where everything was bigger, bolder, and, well, more dramatic. So, how can we bring those same elements into an 80s-inspired wedding? Here’s how we planned a shoot that’s full of 80s flair, inspired by the unforgettable aesthetics and drama of Rivals.
The 80s were a time of extravagant fashion choices, and weddings in this era were no different. Think dramatic, oversized silhouettes, shoulder pads, dramatic ruffles, and lace details. Brides who were channeling the Rivals aesthetic might wear a gown with a structured bodice, puffed sleeves, and layers of tulle or satin. Picture a wedding dress that screams both elegance and boldness, like something straight out of a primetime soap opera.
When it comes to 80s wedding hairstyles, think BIG. Teased and voluminous hair was all the rage, and a wedding inspired by Rivals needs to reflect that bold beauty. Opt for a high-volume updo or go for loose curls with tons of hairspray to keep the look in place all night. Don’t forget the iconic feathered style—this gives off the Rivals-era glam that made the 80s unforgettable.
For makeup, it’s all about making a statement. Bold, winged eyeliner, smoky eyeshadow in shades of charcoal or metallic, and heavy blush to create defined cheekbones were typical of the time. For lips we opted for a classic nude which worked beautifully, adding to the dramatic, glamorous look.
4. Retro Wedding Decor: Think Glam and Drama
To really bring the 80s vibe into your wedding decor, draw inspiration from the lavish and opulent settings often seen in Rivals. Look for ways to incorporate glitzy elements like mirrored surfaces, chandeliers, and ornate candelabras. Incorporate vintage elements such as gilded frames and plush furniture, creating a glamorous atmosphere. And of course, the more extravagant, the better!
Don’t shy away from using a lot of shimmer and shine in your table settings and decor. Think metallic table runners, gold flatware, and sparkling crystal centerpieces. Large, bold floral arrangements in vibrant colors will not only elevate the space but will also enhance that dramatic, high-stakes energy of Rivals.
A wedding inspired by Rivals wouldn’t be complete without the iconic sounds of the 1980s. You can’t go wrong with an 80s-inspired playlist that spans pop hits, power ballads, and iconic rock songs. Get the party started with artists like Madonna, Whitney Houston, and Prince. A song like "Like a Prayer" or "Take On Me" will certainly get everyone on the dance floor and bring that retro energy to life.
Incorporate a few more slow songs for the romantic moments, but keep the tempo high for those group dance numbers. After all, this wedding should feel as larger-than-life as the drama unfolding in Rivals.
The wedding cake should reflect the decadent, over-the-top essence of the 80s. Think multiple layers of fondant or pastel shades with bold geometric patterns. You could even add metallic touches, like edible gold leaf, for a glamorous look. For a truly Rivals-inspired cake, consider a sleek, high-rise design that mirrors the luxurious, competitive world of the show.
Alternatively, for something a little more fun, consider a cake with an eccentric, statement-making topper—a bride and groom figurine styled in classic 80s fashion or something that references the dramatic, over-the-top nature of Rivals.
